![]() ![]() ![]() Whether he writes a gothic morality tale in which a male exotic dancer is haunted by his maiden aunt from beyond the grave, or about a self-help guru who tells his followers his mission is to discover who's been "crapping in your oatmeal," Saunders's stories are both indelibly strange and vividly real. The stories in Pastoralia are set in a slightly skewed version of America, where elements of contemporary life have been merged, twisted, and amplified, casting their absurdityand our humanityin a startling new light. His remarkable first collection of stories was hailed by The New York Times as "the debut of an exciting new voice in fiction." Garrison Keillor called him "wildly funny, pure, generousall that a great humorist should be." With this new collection, George Saunders takes us even further into the shocking, uproarious and oddly familiar landscape of his imagination. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He has this amazing line where, at the same moment that he’s calling for the education of the poor, something the Virginia legislature would reject, he refers to the poor as “rubbish.” I became very aware of the importance of how Jefferson talked about the poor. But it also had to do with when I was working on “Madison and Jefferson,” which I coauthored with Andrew Burstein. Part of it has to do with my graduate training my first book dealt with race, class and gender. When you’re a historian, you gravitate toward certain issues. When did you first start working on the idea of the “poor white” or “poor white trash?” It’s a bracing, sometimes upsetting read, beginning with its name, a term which still causes deep offense in some quarters. The book has been on Isenberg’s curriculum for 15 years, as part of a history class called “Crime, Conspiracy, and Courtroom Dramas,” which she teaches at Louisiana State University.įrom “Mockingbird,” Isenberg’s book travels back to the first English arrivals on the American shore, tracing four centuries of how we talk and think about class (and race) in our most unequal union. ![]() Nancy Isenberg’s book “White Trash” begins by looking at the characters in "To Kill a Mockingbird." Both the book and the movie play with the divide between Atticus Finch, who is saintly and proper, and the poor white family, the Ewells, whose daughter’s false rape accusation is at the story’s center, as an example that there are two kinds of white people in the South. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We also discuss the power of early developmental narratives and how experiences of friendship, love, connection and loss can serve as pillars for making us better human beings in all aspects of life. Our conversation covers a wide range of topics, including mental health, physical health and performance, and provides actionable tools that anyone, regardless of age or profession, can apply to live a more effective and meaningful life. Jocko describes a particularly powerful tool of using perspective shifts to allow for ‘detachment’- as a unique way to identify novel solutions to problems. And we discuss the qualities of successful leaders, including how to build confidence and real bonds when working with a team or family/friends. Jocko explains how discipline and specific daily routines allow for productivity and creativity. We discuss how people can build and sculpt their identity and psychology through specific mindsets and actions and how to adapt the self to novel and challenging situations, using specific daily routines. We consider how “energy” actually stems from physical action and describe practical tools and scientific mechanisms for leveraging exercise, cold exposure, nutrition, fasting, hydration, sunlight, mindset and music to make us feel more energized and what that, in turn, does for our life.
